Plot summary
Emily Schiffman, a scientist with the USGS, tracks a run of minor earthquakes under Los Angeles. She theorizes that the tremors are building toward a super quake that could sink the city into a lava-filled chasm. Jack, an engineer whose deep fracking operation set the quakes off, feels bound to help. The two make their way through a city already coming apart, trying to push the epicenter toward Long Beach and save millions of lives, among them Jack's daughter.
