Plot summary
Monty Capuletti lives in New Dorp, Staten Island, earns his living photographing babies, and spends his free time drinking, gambling and smoking marijuana. His wife Rose comes from a wealthy Irish family, and her mother Kathleen Monahan owns a department store chain; Kathleen dislikes the way her son-in-law behaves, and the Italian-Irish split runs through the family. Kathleen dies when her plane crashes, and the family lawyer Daniel Scrappleton delivers her will. It states that Monty inherits ten million dollars only if he cleans up his habits for a year. Should he fail, Kathleen's nephew Clive Barlow takes the money instead. Nicky Cerone, Monty's closest friend, stands by him, while the men he drinks and bets with take an interest in the outcome.
