Plot summary
Bud Macintosh and Doyle Johnson share a place in Arizona and spend their days doing nothing much. Jen and Monique, their girlfriends, are devoted to environmental causes, and they end things with the two men because of how immature they are. On the drive home, Bud and Doyle spot the Bio-Dome, a closed ecological system where the researcher Dr. Noah Faulkner is getting ready to lock his team away for a year with no contact from outside. Thinking the building is a shopping mall, the friends wander in looking for a restroom and end up locked inside along with the team. Dr. Leaky, who put money into the project, wants them taken out, but Dr. Faulkner says that would ruin the whole experiment, so the two men stay.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Bio-Dome (1996)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Producers wanted to film inside the real Biosphere 2 facility, but manager Steve Bannon refused permission, telling them the project was focused on legitimizing its science and education program rather than making movies.
- Jack Black and Kyle Gass first performed on screen together as the duo Tenacious D in cameo roles in Bio-Dome, before the act became famous on its own.
- Before their real Biosphere 2 mission even began, the scientists staged their own comedic play called The Wrong Stuff, parodying everything that could go wrong, which ended up foreshadowing the plot of Bio-Dome.
- Two of the real Biosphere 2 scientists, Jane Poynter and Taber MacCallum, watched Bio-Dome and enjoyed it, saying they laughed a lot and had expected any film about their experience to resemble Total Recall rather than a comedy.
- The film tied for the lowest possible score on Metacritic, earning just 1 out of 100 from critics, a rating the site listed as indicating overwhelming dislike.
- At the 1996 Golden Raspberry Awards, star Pauly Shore tied with Tom Arnold for the Worst Actor Razzie, with Arnold's win covering three separate films: Big Bully, Carpool, and The Stupids.
- Biosphere 2's then-manager, Wallace Smith Broecker, was offended by the comedy and called it a step backward, since the real facility was trying to shed its troubled past and build a reputation as a serious scientific institution.
