Plot summary
John Beckwith and Jeremy Grey work as divorce mediators in Washington, D.C. Together they spend their free time attending weddings they were never asked to, inventing names and backstories for themselves. At the reception for the eldest daughter of Treasury Secretary William Cleary, they notice two of his other daughters, Gloria and Claire. John is drawn to Claire, the maid of honor, and her boyfriend, Sack Lodge, interrupts them. Gloria invites both men to a weekend at the family compound in Maryland.

- The film eventually grossed over $209 million domestically, making it the first R-rated comedy to top $200 million at the U.S. box office.
- The phrase "stage-five clinger," invented for the film by co-writer Steve Faber, entered everyday slang for someone who latches onto another person in an unwanted way.
- Director David Dobkin considered releasing a version of the film that was not R-rated to broaden its commercial appeal, but abandoned the idea after a consultant listed the many R-rated elements and he realized "The two funniest scenes in the movie would have had to go."
- Bradley Cooper was cast as Sack Lodge without director David Dobkin even watching his audition tape, because Dobkin was already impressed by Cooper's test reading.
