Plot summary
Pete Marshall works for the Trotter Poll and is sent to the mountain town of Plainville to look for Hector Smedley, a co-worker who disappeared while conducting a survey. The last household Smedley was to visit belongs to the Fleagles. Mamie Fleagle Smithers Johnson runs the family, with her gun-carrying twin sons, Mert and Bert, and her daughter Elany. Grandma Fleagle has hidden seventy thousand dollars taken in a bank robbery by Bonnie Fleagle and her father, and refuses to tell the family where it is. Mamie orders Pete to pass himself off as the boyfriend of Bonnie, who is in prison, so that the old woman will confide in him. Grandma tells Pete that her relatives are poisoning her.
