Jack Pennick

Biography

Jack Pennick was an American film actor whose screen work ran from 1926 to 1962 and took in more than 140 pictures. He was born in Portland, Oregon, and worked as a gold miner and then as a horse wrangler on film sets in the 1920s, until John Ford spotted him; he went on to act and to serve as a military technical adviser. Pennick was a leading member of the informal John Ford Stock Company and appeared in dozens of the director's films, and he also drilled the military extras on John Wayne's The Alamo (1960). A U.S. Marine who had served in China and in World War I, he re-enlisted in the Navy in 1941 and worked under Ford in the Field Photographic Unit of the Office of Strategic Services, receiving the Silver Star for action in North Africa. On television he played Sergeant Duffy in Gunslinger in 1961.

Pennick worked as a horse wrangler on film productions in the 1920s before John Ford noticed him and he began acting and serving as a military technical adviser.

Pennick joined the U.S. Navy again in September 1941, when he was 45. In December 1942 he became a chief warrant officer, then served in the Field Photographic Unit under Ford, drilling and training new recruits.
