Plot summary
Jan Ashe has grown up in San Francisco with her father, Stephen, who raised her alone after her mother died in childbirth. His wealthy family has all but cut ties with both of them, unwilling to accept his drinking or her willful ways. Stephen earns his living as a defense lawyer, and he has just won an acquittal for Ace Wilfong, a gangster charged with murder, though he knows about the gambling and other illegal business Ace runs. Jan, meanwhile, is engaged to Dwight Winthrop, a polo player. When she meets Ace, she finds him and the life around him exciting, and her attachment to him troubles her father.
