Plot summary
A yacht sails past Hirta, a remote Scottish island, and the yachtsman aboard finds it looks deserted, though his book says people live there. His crewman, Andrew Gray, says the book is out of date and the island is empty now, and tries to talk him out of landing, but the yachtsman goes ashore. On the cliff edge they find a gravestone, and Andrew, who once lived there, remembers. Robbie Manson, Andrew's friend, wants to leave Hirta and see the wider world. Robbie's sister Ruth is the woman Andrew loves, and the two of them mean to stay.

- Powell and his cast and crew joined an expedition to a very isolated part of the UK reachable only by boat, staying several months; there were no flights there at the time, only occasional radio communication, and the team had to build their own accommodation.
- Director Michael Powell was refused permission to film on St Kilda, the archipelago whose evacuation inspired the story, so he found another suitable island, Foula in the Shetland Islands north of Scotland.
- Powell's book about the shoot was first titled 200,000 Feet on Foula, a figure referring to the amount of film the production used rather than the height of the island's cliffs.
