Plot summary
Two centuries after the Norman Conquest, in the reign of Edward I, Walter of Gurnie comes home from Oxford for the reading of his father's will and receives only a pair of boots. The earl's Norman widow, Eleanor, Countess of Lessford, seizes Saxon hostages to prevent unrest, and Walter joins Saxons who free them, then flees England once he is recognized. With Tristram Griffin, a Saxon archer, he sets out for Cathay to make his fortune. The two travel with a caravan of gifts that the merchant Anthemus is sending to Kublai Khan, under the protection of the Mongol commander Bayan of the Hundred Eyes, who takes an interest in Tristram's longbow and in Walter's learning. Lu Chung, who leads the caravan, blackmails Walter into helping Maryam, Anthemus's half-English sister, get away.
