Plot summary
While collecting donations for the Reformed Criminals Assistance League, Miss Marple and Mr Stringer call on the wealthy recluse Mr Enderby. He falls down the long entrance staircase and dies. Enderby was terrified of cats, so the animal Miss Marple finds in the house troubles her, and she keeps a piece of mud stamped with the print of a riding boot. Inspector Craddock is not convinced: the death certificate gives heart failure, and Enderby had a severe heart condition for years. Miss Marple listens in when the family gathers for the reading of the will. Four relatives each receive an equal share: George Crossfield, Rosamund Shane, Hector Enderby and Cora Lansquenet. Cora says Enderby was murdered.
