Plot summary
In 1912 Inveranoch, Scotland, the veterinarian Andrew MacDhui shares his house with Mary, his seven-year-old daughter, and her cat Thomasina. His wife's death has left him without faith and without sympathy for others. Thomasina is hurt near the fish market and contracts tetanus; MacDhui orders her put down. Willie Bannock, his assistant, reminds him that he promised Mary he would make the cat well, but MacDhui is absorbed in operating on a patient's guide dog. Refusing to speak or look at her father, Mary declares him dead. Beyond the town, in the glen, lives Lori MacGregor, known as Mad Lori, who keeps a rough hospital for sick animals; the townspeople, unhappy with MacDhui's lack of compassion, begin taking their pets to her.
