Plot summary
Top secret research is reaching the Soviets, and FBI agent Jim Belden is given the task of finding the mastermind behind the leak and tracing the channels the spies use. Professor Albert Kafer, a space-weapons scientist, is under Soviet pressure to cooperate, with his son held as the lever. Alexi Laschenkov, the top Eastern-bloc spy in the country, works under the name Gregory Anders. The screenplay draws on a Reader's Digest article from 1951 by J. Edgar Hoover about the atomic spy case; here real atomic spying gives way to unnamed top secret scientific programs, and location shooting took place around New England, Washington Union Station and FBI laboratories.

- The screenplay was inspired by J. Edgar Hoover's May 1951 Reader's Digest article "The Crime of the Century: The Case of the A-Bomb Spies," about atomic spy Klaus Fuchs's meeting with chemist Harry Gold. Gold's testimony later led to the treason case against Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
