Emma Dunn

Biography

Born in Birkenhead, Emma Dunn was an English actress who began performing onstage as a teenager, spent several years in London theaters, and later earned a reputation on Broadway. In 1906 she appeared in the first American staging of Ibsen's Peer Gynt, cast as the mother Ase opposite Richard Mansfield even though she was two decades younger than the star. Under impresario David Belasco, she appeared in The Warrens of Virginia and The Governor's Lady; in The Easiest Way she portrayed Annie in blackface. After playing vaudeville in 1913, she made her screen debut in Mother (1914), a silent version of her stage success directed by Maurice Tourneur. Old Lady 31 followed in 1920, with Dunn repeating her Broadway role, and she added another silent, Pied Piper Malone, in 1924. Her first sound film was Side Street, where she shared billing with Matt, Owen and Tom Moore. Dunn later wrote two manuals on elocution.
