Plot summary
Walter Hartright, a drawing master, has been hired to teach at Limmeridge House in Victorian England. Walking there on the night of April 4, 1851, he meets a woman dressed in white who knows the Fairlie family; she flees when a carriage comes, and Doctor Nevin inside it is looking for someone who ran away from a nearby asylum. At the house Marian Halcombe, cousin and companion to the heiress Laura Fairlie, welcomes him, and he meets Laura's uncle Frederick, who never leaves his rooms, and the houseguest Count Fosco. Laura is engaged to Sir Percival Glyde, who is eager to marry into her wealth. When Walter first sees Laura he takes her for the woman from the road.
