Plot summary

Dr. James Kildare is an intern at General Hospital, trained by Dr. Leonard Gillespie, and his small salary has kept him from proposing to nurse Mary Lamont. Wealthy brain surgeon Gregory Lane is his rival for her. Paul Messenger, whose daughter Kildare once treated, arranges an offer for Kildare at the Messenger Institute, and Kildare also arranges for Gillespie to be seen by a specialist for the melanoma Gillespie is fighting. Kildare turns the offer down to stay near his mentor, so Mary gives up hope of marrying him and is posted as Lane's surgical nurse. Kildare and Lane are put on the case of an unidentified man with a skull fracture who refuses the operation he needs, and Lane, having lost too many patients on the operating table, doubts his own skill.
