John Wray
Biography
John Wray was an American actor of stage and screen, known for character parts. Born in Philadelphia in 1887, he started his stage career there in 1911 with Camille at the Girard Avenue Theatre. After spells in vaudeville and repertory companies, he returned to New York, where his early work included small roles in Hamlet. Like many Broadway performers, he went to Hollywood once sound pictures took hold and drew notice as Himmelstoss, the brutal drill sergeant of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), and as a gangster in The Czar of Broadway. He also played the contortionist called the Frog in The Miracle Man. Though his parts grew smaller, he stayed busy as the warden in You Only Live Once (1937) and a starving farmer in Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936). He acted in many Broadway plays and co-wrote Nightstick, which became the film Alibi. He died in 1940.
