Biography

Born La Raine Johnson in Roosevelt, Utah, and raised in California, Laraine Day was an American actress who became a contract star at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. She started with the Long Beach Players, where a talent scout spotted her, leading to a Goldwyn contract and a bit part in Stella Dallas (1937). After Goldwyn dropped her, she won leads at RKO in George O'Brien Westerns and took the name Laraine Day in 1938. MGM signed her in 1939, and she became known as Nurse Mary Lamont in seven Dr. Kildare movies beginning with Calling Dr. Kildare. She starred in Alfred Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent (1940) and the psychological mystery The Locket (1946). In 1941 she was voted Hollywood's number one star of tomorrow. Later she hosted her own television and radio shows, acted on stage in Angel Street opposite Gregory Peck and in revivals of The Women and The Time of the Cuckoo, and received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.

    In 1938, Day took the name "Laraine Day" to honor Elias Day, her former playhouse manager, who had given her much of her training.

  2. First role

    A talent scout noticed Day performing with the Long Beach Players, and she then signed with Goldwyn studios, making her cinematic debut there. Her contract was dropped soon after because she "lacked talent".
