Biography

Alma Kruger was an American actress who spent decades on the stage before she began making films in her sixties. Born in Pittsburgh to a businessman who acted as an amateur, she trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and made her Broadway debut in John the Baptist in 1907. From 1907 to 1935 she appeared in Broadway plays, many of them Shakespearean, playing Gertrude in Hamlet, Olivia in Twelfth Night and Nerissa in The Merchant of Venice. Samuel Goldwyn brought her to Hollywood, and her first film, These Three (1936), was followed by more than 40 movies in a little over ten years. She played Nurse Molly Byrd in most of the Dr. Kildare films, Empress Maria Theresa in Marie Antoinette (1938), and Henrietta Sutton, a subversive society matron, in Alfred Hitchcock's Saboteur (1942). Her final film was Forever Amber (1947), and she also worked in radio.
