Plot summary
Paul Renard, a French musician who fought as a soldier in World War I, killed a German conscript named Walter Holderlin. He confesses the killing to a priest and receives absolution, yet the guilt stays with him. From a letter he found on Walter's body he takes an address, and he goes to Germany to seek the family out. Anti-French feeling runs through the town, and Dr. Holderlin refuses at first to let Paul into his house. Walter's fiancée Elsa identifies Paul as the man who has been laying flowers on Walter's grave, and the doctor changes his mind. Paul hides what really connects him to their son, saying only that they were friends and had studied at the same musical conservatory.
