Plot summary
The Palais Royale in Akron, Ohio, is where two dancers meet Jimmy Harris, the son of a wealthy family. Bubbles, a chorine, and Judy O'Brien, who hopes for a ballet career, are in the same troupe, and each is drawn to him. Jimmy is estranged from his wife Elinor and still loves her. Back in New York, Bubbles takes a burlesque job. Madame Basilova, the dancers' teacher and manager, sets up a tryout for Judy before the ballet impresario Steve Adams.

- For musical authenticity, studio music head Dave Dreyer used a different ensemble for each sequence: 50 studio players for the big ballet, the Leon Taz South American tango band for the Club Ferdinand, and a 12-piece "Negro jive band" for the Palais Royale chorus number.
- Beginning in the 1970s, Dance, Girl, Dance enjoyed a revival and critical reassessment ascribed to the burgeoning feminist movement, which saw it as a rare example of empowered women; in 2002 it was listed among the National Society of Film Critics' Top 100 "Essential Films".
