Dwight Yoakam
Biography
Dwight Yoakam is a country singer and songwriter from Pikeville, Kentucky, who also works as an actor and director. He grew up in Columbus, Ohio, and later moved to Los Angeles, where he met guitarist and producer Pete Anderson in 1982. Reprise Records issued his debut album, Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc., in 1986, and his first three albums each topped Billboard's Top Country Albums chart. He has won two Grammy Awards and an Academy of Country Music award, and This Time (1993) is his most commercially successful album. On screen he has appeared in Red Rock West (1993), Sling Blade (1996), Panic Room (2002), and Wedding Crashers (2005), and he wrote and directed South of Heaven, West of Hell (2000). His television work includes P.S. I Luv U, Under the Dome, and Goliath.

Yoakam covered Johnny Horton's "Honky Tonk Man", and his version reached number three on Billboard Hot Country Songs in 1986. That year its music video was the first from a country artist shown on MTV.

Yoakam convinced a retired Buck Owens to sing "Streets of Bakersfield" with him on a CBS television special, and the studio version's success brought Owens out of retirement and back to Capitol Records.

Billy Bob Thornton, who directed and acted, cast Yoakam as Doyle Hargraves in the 1996 film Sling Blade. Yoakam told Country Daily in 2016 that this part was the first in his acting career he expected to have a lasting impact.
