Plot summary
Chev Chelios is a hitman for Carlito's crime empire in Los Angeles, and his girlfriend Eve does not know what he does for a living. He wants out, and he lets his latest target slip away. Ricky Verona, a small-time criminal, wants Chelios's place as Carlito's hired gun, and he and his brother Alex knock Chelios out and inject him with the Beijing Cocktail, a synthetic drug that blocks adrenaline and slows the heart until it stops. Chelios calls Doc Miles, a mafia surgeon, who tells him he must keep his adrenaline pumping and does not know of an antidote. Chelios stays alive by picking fights, driving recklessly and taking drugs while he hunts for the men who poisoned him.

- Co-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor personally operated the film's two cameras themselves, one on a wide shot and one on a close-up, while star Jason Statham performed all of his own fight and car stunts, including a fight staged inside a helicopter 3,000 feet above Los Angeles.
- The film was written in 2003 with Johnny Knoxville in mind for the lead role, and it was Jason Statham who eventually came on board to play the part instead.
- Instead of shooting on 35mm film like most productions of the era, the filmmakers shot Crank entirely on digital videotape using Canon XL2 and Sony CineAlta HDC-F950 cameras.
