Plot summary
Danielle Edmondston is a troubled, promiscuous student in a conservative suburb of Oklahoma City in 1987. She clashes with her mother, Sue-Ann, who is preparing to marry a Mormon man named Ray. After her misbehavior gets her sent to special ed, Danielle becomes friends with Clarke Walters, a shy classmate who keeps his sexuality hidden. The two take off in a car belonging to Clarke's father, Joseph, heading for Fresno, California, in the hope of finding Danny Briggs, Danielle's birth father. Joseph is fiercely opposed to his son, and once the pair are gone, Sue-Ann and Clarke's mother, Peggy, follow after them.

- Sally Hawkins and Lisa Kudrow were both originally cast in November 2009, but Hawkins was replaced by Milla Jovovich as Sue-Ann and Kudrow was replaced by Mary Steenburgen as Peggy before filming.
- Writer-director Abe Sylvia developed the story back in 2004 while he was a student at UCLA, basing it on his own adolescent experiences growing up in Oklahoma in the 1980s.
