Plot summary
Recently divorced Meg Altman moves into a four-story Manhattan brownstone with her eleven-year-old daughter, Sarah. A wealthy recluse who lived there before had a panic room built to shelter himself from intruders, with walls of concrete and steel, a heavy steel door, cameras and a public address system. On the family's first night, three men enter the house. Junior is the grandson of the earlier owner; Burnham, who installs security systems for a living, built this room; Raoul is a thug Junior brought. They want bearer bonds locked in a floor safe inside the panic room. Meg wakes, spots the men on camera and gets Sarah inside, where the telephone does not work.

- The arithmetic forced Sony's hand after Nicole Kidman left: closing the film for good would have paid the studio $3 million in insurance, while stopping and restarting it would have cost $10 million, so a replacement had to be found fast.
- Jodie Foster was free only because her own directing project Flora Plum had collapsed when its star Russell Crowe was injured. To take over from Kidman she also quit as head of the awards jury at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, with a week to prepare.
- Five weeks into her work Foster discovered she was pregnant. David Fincher kept shooting and swapped her tank top for a heavy sweater to hide it, and stunt double Jill Stokesberry took the action scenes.
- Studio executives watched the dailies, disliked seeing Foster conceal her stomach behind a coat and purse, and shut the film down until she had given birth; she returned after the birth of her second son to reshoot the opening scene.
- The burglar Raoul was first offered to Maynard James Keenan, whom Fincher had directed in A Perfect Circle's video for "Judith". Keenan was tied up fronting Tool, so the part went to country singer Dwight Yoakam on the strength of Sling Blade.
