Biography

Douglas Hodge is an English actor, director and musician. Born in Plymouth and raised in Kent, he studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art but left before finishing. His stage career has ranged across Harold Pinter, Shakespeare and Chekhov, and he earned Olivier Award nominations for his work in The Caretaker, Guys and Dolls and Inadmissible Evidence. He took the role of Albin in a London production of La Cage aux Folles, a performance that brought him an Olivier Award, and repeated the part on Broadway, where he won a Tony. On screen he has appeared in Mansfield Park (2007), Robin Hood (2010), Diana (2013) and Joker (2019), and on television in Penny Dreadful and The Great. He has also directed theater, written the musical 101 Dalmatians, and released albums of his own songs.

    Hodge was accepted into the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London but left before graduating because he was unhappy there, and it did not lessen his wish to act.

    In 2004, Hodge directed for the first time, staging a double bill of The Dumb Waiter and Other Pieces at the Oxford Playhouse.

    In 2015 Hodge directed on Broadway for the first time, staging a revival of Pinter's 1971 play Old Times with Clive Owen, Eve Best and Kelly Reilly, which opened at the American Airlines Theatre.
