Plot summary
In 1972, Mason Skiles is a U.S. diplomat stationed in Beirut with his Lebanese wife, Nadia, and the couple have taken in Karim, a thirteen-year-old Palestinian boy who says he has no family. At a party in their home, Skiles's friend Cal Riley, a CIA officer, asks to question Karim about a brother of his linked to the Munich massacre. Armed men attack the gathering, seize Karim, and Nadia is killed. A decade on, Skiles is an alcoholic labor arbitrator in New England, straining to keep his firm going. Sully, an old client, arrives with a passport, money and a plane ticket, sent by the U.S. government, and says Skiles has been asked to lecture in Lebanon. In Beirut he learns that Cal Riley has been abducted, and that the kidnappers want Skiles as their negotiator.

- The trailer was attacked for dehumanizing Arabs and Muslims, for a white savior narrative and for failing to show Lebanese people as fully formed characters; its tagline about "2,000 years of revenge, vendetta, murder... welcome to Beirut" was called a misrepresentation of a country of many religions and sects.
