Plot summary
Willard Russell serves in the Solomon Islands during the war. On the way home he passes through an Ohio town where Charlotte waits tables and Carl Henderson works as a photographer. Willard and Charlotte wed and settle in Knockemstiff, Ohio, where their son Arvin is born. Carl and Sandy also wed. In 1950 Helen Hatton, whom Willard's mother Emma had hoped he would wed, marries Roy Laferty, a preacher whose sermons involve venomous spiders poured over his head. Their daughter is Lenora. Willard raises a wooden cross behind the family home and brings Arvin to kneel and pray at a fallen log beneath it. When Charlotte learns she has cancer, Willard prays for her to recover.
