Plot summary
Marie-Louise leaves the American West after her gold prospector father dies and joins her mother in New York, where she wants to become an actress. One night on stage her long dress tangles; she spins the fabric instead of falling, and the Serpentine Dance is born. The audience calls for more, and she becomes Loïe Fuller. She leaves New York, where imitators try to steal her innovations, for Paris, where she dazzles the capital at the Folies Bergères.

- The film's low budget made two planned shots of Soko crossing the Atlantic by boat impossible, so director Stéphanie Di Giusto took Soko and producers Marie Jardillier and Emma Javaux onto a ferry in February 2016 and shot the scenes with a camera, without a permit.
- Elle Fanning was originally cast as Isadora Duncan opposite Soko's Loie Fuller, with Gaspard Ulliel, Melanie Thierry, Francois Damiens and Louis-Do de Lencquesaing also in the cast; by September 2015 Fanning had been replaced by Lily-Rose Depp.
- Director Stéphanie Di Giusto admitted taking liberties with the truth by inventing the character of Louis d'Orsay, played by Gaspard Ulliel, because she needed a masculine presence in a film otherwise filled with women; Loïe Fuller was gay, and she did not want that to be the film's subject.
- Soko trained seven hours a day for two months to play Loie Fuller and did not use a body double in the film; she performed all the dance scenes herself.
