Plot summary
In the mountains of North Carolina during the Depression, George Pemberton has built a timber business. He meets and marries Serena Shaw. She moves onto his land and soon runs things, questioning him while remaining affectionate. Serena proves as capable as any of his men: she directs the loggers, kills rattlesnakes, and saves a life in the woods. Buchanan, who shares the business with George, feels his own authority slipping away, and the two partners clash.
