Plot summary

At the siege of Chalus Castle in 1199, Robin Longstride serves as an archer in King Richard's army, and after a tavern brawl he and his comrades Will Scarlett, Allan A'Dayle and Little John are locked in the stocks. When the king is killed, they free themselves and desert. On the road they drive off Godfrey, an English knight attacking the royal guard, and use the dead knights' armor to win passage across the Channel. Before sailing, Robin promises the dying Sir Robert of Loxley to carry his sword to his father in Nottingham. In Nottingham, the blind Sir Walter asks him to keep posing as his son so the crown cannot seize the family lands, and Robert's widow, Lady Marian, is cold toward him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Robin Hood (2010)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Sienna Miller was cast as Maid Marian but exited in late 2008 because rewrites to the script had made her too young for the role; Cate Blanchett was cast in February 2009, after Rachel Weisz and Kate Winslet had also been considered.
  • Crowe fractured both of his legs doing a scene in which he "jumped off a castle portcullis onto rock-hard uneven ground", but never discussed the injury with production and never took a day off because of it, only learning about it from an X-ray a decade later.
  • On July 31 thieves broke into the production's props building at night and stole cameras that were being used to shoot the film.
  • The battering ram used during filming at Bourne Wood in Surrey, nicknamed "Rosie" by the crew and worth £60,000, was donated by Russell Crowe to the Scottish charity the Clanranald Trust for battle re-enactments at Duncarron, a fort built in a forest near the Carron Valley Reservoir.
  • To create the invading French armada and the battle that follows, MPC added 200 computer-animated ships and 6,000 soldiers to the 8 practical boats, with 500 extras used in principal photography.
  • Scott's dissatisfaction with the script delayed filming, and during the 2008 rewrites Crowe was considered for a dual role as both Robin and the Sheriff; Scott dropped that notion and the film, then called Nottingham, was retitled to reflect the more traditional angle.
  • Mark Lawson, interviewing Crowe on BBC Radio 4, suggested there were hints of Irish in his accent, which angered Crowe, who described the suggestion as "bollocks" and stormed out.
