Edmund Gwenn
Biography
Edmund Gwenn was an English actor who started acting on the London stage in 1895, learning his craft with Willie Edouin's company before appearing at the Court Theatre in plays by Shaw, Galsworthy and Granville-Barker. He later performed on Broadway and in West End productions. His film work began in 1916, and after settling in Hollywood in 1940, he appeared in a wide range of American pictures. His performance as Kris Kringle in Miracle on 34th Street (1947) earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and he received another Oscar nomination for Mister 880 (1950). Gwenn worked with Alfred Hitchcock on four pictures, including Foreign Correspondent (1940) and The Trouble with Harry (1955), and he appeared in Pride and Prejudice (1940), The Keys of the Kingdom (1944), and Them! (1954). His last film was The Rocket from Calabuch (1956).

In Cheer Boys Cheer (1939), Gwenn played a capitalist who wanted to take over a family brewery. It was his last British film role and is credited as the first authentic Ealing comedy.

Gwenn made his first appearance in a sound film in 1931, playing a role in an adaptation of Shaw's How He Lied to Her Husband that was produced at Elstree.
