Plot summary
In Depression-era Yorkshire, England, hard times come to the Carraclough family, and Mr. and Mrs. Carraclough must sell their rough collie, Lassie, to the Duke of Rudling, a rich man who has always admired her. Lassie is the companion of their young son, Joe, and he grows despondent once she is gone. The Duke keeps the collie in his kennels, but she will have nothing to do with him. She finds ways to get out of the kennels and make her way back to Joe.

- Some accounts say a female collie was first picked to play Lassie but shed so badly during summer shooting that trainer Rudd Weatherwax replaced her with the male collie Pal, who had been hired to perform the rapids stunt and looked more impressive in the part.
- Trainer Rudd Weatherwax was given all rights to the Lassie name and trademark by MGM in place of the back pay the studio owed him.
- MGM executives watching the dailies were reportedly so moved that they ordered extra scenes added to the picture while it was still in production.
- Film Score Monthly's 2010 collection of the seven MGM Lassie films' scores, limited to 1,000 copies, had to be reconstructed because nearly half the music masters were lost; it was built mainly from Music and Effects tracks and monaural quarter-inch tapes.
