Plot summary
Marie Skłodowska lives in Paris with no family or friends, studying physics at the Sorbonne, where her health suffers and she faints in class. Her tutor, Professor Perot, invites her to a soirée given by his wife, and there she meets Pierre Curie, a shy physicist who devotes himself entirely to his work. He lets her share his laboratory and sees that she is a gifted scientist. Learning that she intends to go back to Poland to teach after graduation, he takes her to his family's country home. The two are so absorbed in science that they recognize their love only at the last moment, and Pierre proposes in terms of logic and chemistry.

- Madame Curie was set for 1941 production starring Greta Garbo with George Cukor directing, but MGM rejected Aldous Huxley's script as "too literary" and shelved the project; Garbo then left MGM for good in 1942.
- Joan Crawford wanted the role of Marie because she wanted to play serious characters, but Mayer rejected her request; the part went to Greer Garson, and Crawford cited it as a reason to leave MGM and sign with Warner Brothers.
- Universal bought the rights to Ève Curie's biography with Irene Dunne in mind to play Marie, and Dunne traveled to Europe to meet Ève Curie, but Universal sold the property to MGM a few years later.
- Mervyn LeRoy replaced Albert Lewin as director of Madame Curie, after Lewin was fired shortly before production began.
