Plot summary
Police drag the river and comb the countryside around a small English village for Mrs. Shellbrook, a guest at the local hotel who has been missing for days. Mrs. Bramson holds court in the village and pretends to need a wheelchair; she accuses her maid Dora of stealing a chicken and breaking china and threatens to send her away. Dora mentions Danny, her Irish boyfriend, who works at the hotel, and when he visits the house he charms Mrs. Bramson by telling her that she is like his mother. He takes the job she offers and moves in as her servant. Olivia Grayne, Mrs. Bramson's niece and companion, lives in the house. When the attorney Justin Laurie brings Mrs. Bramson money, he warns her against keeping so much cash on hand, and she ignores him.
