Plot summary
Countess Marie Walewska, a Polish countess, is married to Count Anastas Walewski, who is much older than she is. Napoleon Bonaparte attempts to seduce her, but she refuses him. Polish leaders dispatch her to become Napoleon Bonaparte's mistress, because they feel she can influence him to support Polish independence. She resists until she is convinced that giving in will save Poland.
