Plot summary
Peggy Evans, twenty-one, is bored with her job as a soda jerk in Hotchkiss Falls, New York. After the store's new general manager, Bob Stuart, reprimands her, she leaves a note at her boardinghouse that reads as a suicide note and disappears, and the town blames Bob. Peggy has gone to New York City, where she spends her savings on a makeover. A falling paint can knocks her unconscious outside a newspaper office, and the publisher, Durstin, assumes she has amnesia and prints her photograph. When Durstin jokes that she might be a kidnapped heiress, Peggy searches the paper's archives for missing persons and finds Carol Burden, a girl kidnapped seventeen years earlier and never found. Bob, fired from the store, sees the photograph and sets out to prove she is alive.
