  1. A change of course

Ferguson started in entertainment as a teenager, playing drums for Glasgow punk bands. At 18 he was a session musician and drummed for Nico on a few dates of her Scotland tour.

  2. Big break

After Rick Siegel, who would become his agent, spotted him at the Edinburgh Festival and urged him to try America, Ferguson relocated to Los Angeles in November 1994. He played baker Logan McDonough on the short-lived 1995 ABC comedy Maybe This Time.

  3. Big break

Ferguson was cast on The Drew Carey Show as Mr. Wick, the boss of the title character, a part he had from 1996 to 2003. He gave the role an over-the-top posh English accent, saying it was "to make up for generations of English actors doing crap Scottish accents."

  4. Behind the camera

Craig Ferguson wrote and starred in The Big Tease, Saving Grace and I'll Be There, and he directed I'll Be There. That film earned him the Audience Award for Best Film at festivals in Aspen, Dallas and Valencia, plus Best New Director at Napa Valley.
