Plot summary
Grace Trevethyn's husband dies and leaves her with debts large enough to take her house and everything in it. Her gardener, Matthew Stewart, is about to lose his own work, and he keeps a few cannabis plants that are dying in the open. He offers to stay on without pay if Grace looks after them, and in her greenhouse the plants flourish. When Grace learns what such a crop is worth, she puts the greenhouse into production to raise the money the bank wants. Matthew's girlfriend Nicky, a fishing boat captain, wants nothing to do with the scheme and wants him to settle down. Some villagers suspect what is going on and look the other way.

- Doc Martin was created for ITV in 2004 by Dominic Minghella, who changed the character's surname from Bamford to Ellingham, a deliberate anagram of the Minghella family name; the series' end titles state that it arose from the film Saving Grace.
- Blethyn said the film began when screenwriter Mark Crowdy was talking to somebody in Los Angeles who mentioned, apropos of nothing, that really good cannabis was more valuable than gold, and he thought it might make an interesting story.
