Plot summary
Jane Steiner was born in England and lives in France with her mother Julia and her father Harry. She is thinking of leaving her acting career behind to become a writer. While traveling in Rome with her father, a journalist, she is handed a small role as Gabriella, the love interest of Cesare Pavese, in an American movie about the writer. The lead is Steve Elliott, an American actor playing Pavese, and his wife Susan is in New York. Jane breaks with Bruno, her French lover, once she meets Steve, and when her scenes are finished she moves into the villa he has rented outside Rome while he keeps working at the studio.
