Plot summary
In the summer of 1967, on the beach at La Goulette in Tunisia, three seventeen-year-old girls spend the season together. Gigi comes from a Sicilian Catholic household, Meriem from a Tunisian Muslim one, and Tina from a French Jewish one. The three of them set out to lose their virginity that summer, a plan their families do not share. Youssef, Meriem's father, works on the TGM railway; Jojo, who is Jewish, sells brik; Giuseppe, Sicilian and Catholic, is a fisherman. The men have been close friends and neighbors for years. Hadj Beji, a wealthy landlord, has his eye on Meriem and wants to marry her, and the girls' plans put the ties between their households under pressure.
