Plot summary
Their camp sits on the site of an old temple, and the men held there spend their days excavating ancient artifacts for the German garrison. The commandant, Major Otto Hecht, a former Austrian antiques dealer, sends valuable pieces to his sister in Switzerland. Digging keeps the prisoners from being transferred to other camps, so they keep reporting the same finds. SS Major Volkmann enforces discipline with reprisal executions of civilians. Zeno, a former monk, leads the island's resistance from a brothel run by his girlfriend Eleana, and Allied headquarters orders him to break the prisoners out.
