Plot summary
Louis-Dominique Bourguignon rides with Malichot's gang in 18th-century France, but their methods do not sit well with him, so he leaves. He joins the army; he and two new friends stay out of the fighting and make off with a general's gold. On the run, the three take shelter at an inn and find Vénus, a gypsy woman held prisoner there. Bourguignon gets her free, and she stays with them. In Paris he assembles a band of his own under the name Cartouche, and many of Malichot's men come over to him. The band robs the wealthy and gives the takings to the poor, which earns Cartouche the people's sympathy, Vénus's love, and the hatred of Malichot and the police.
