Plot summary
Amedeo Battipaglia is a middle-aged Italian who has lived about twenty-five years in Australia, working as a lineman in Bun Bun Ga, a remote settlement in New South Wales. He corresponds with Carmela, a woman in her early thirties in Rome who is his prospective bride. Carmela is a semiliterate prostitute trying to get away from an abusive pimp, and her friend Rosalba writes the letters for her. Neither has told the other the truth, and Amedeo, unhappy about his ordinary looks, sent a photograph of himself standing between two friends, one of them the tall, handsome Giuseppe Bartoni. Carmela flies to Brisbane with other mail-order brides, and Amedeo drives nearly sixteen hundred kilometers to the airport, unsure that she will accept him.
