Plot summary
A wealthy patriarch dies in 1885, and the land and property he leaves behind become the object of a quarrel among his relatives. Ferdinando, one of his sons, sets about buying out the other heirs so that the whole estate will pass into his hands alone. One claim resists him: that of his nephew Amerigo, who refuses to give up his share. La viaccia is the name the story carries in Italian, and it belongs to the family farm at the center of the dispute. Amerigo goes to Florence, where he meets Bianca, a prostitute, and his attachment to her weakens his stand against his uncle.
