Plot summary
Dempsey Cain is a top detective in San Sebastian, California. His younger brother Nick is also a cop, though the force regards him as a screw-up. Nick is having an affair with Dempsey's wife, Gail. Alan Rhinehart, a fellow detective, believes Dempsey is dirty and resents his standing. During a raid on a tenement building, Dempsey is shot, and a doctor states that he is paralyzed below the waist. Nick's carelessness is a factor. Dempsey covers for his brother and is retired from the force. He asks Gail and Nick to help him die.
