Plot summary
The Vatican is short of money during World War II, so Father John Flaherty, a young American priest with a head for figures, is sent to Rome. His first posting after ordination had been as a military chaplain, and it ended when he took a dying soldier's place at a machine gun and held off a German advance. In Rome he raises funds his superiors welcome, selling cigarettes by the tens of thousands through a Mafia don's black market for a share. He also falls in love with Clara, a nun whose faith is wavering, and keeps his calling from her.

- On November 29, 1982, the Republic of Ireland banned Monsignor, with the Irish Film Censor Board citing its mixing of religion and adultery, since Father John Flaherty (Christopher Reeve) has an affair with the postulant nun Clara (Geneviève Bujold). The Film Appeals Board overturned the ban on December 17, which caused controversy among Fianna Fáil members; chairman Ned Brennan wanted it banned on moral grounds.
