Plot summary
Lloyd Fellowes directs a Broadway-bound company in the farce Nothing On, which is being prepared for its American debut in Des Moines. Among the players are Dotty Otley, an aging star; Garry Lejeune, who has a temper; Frederick Dallas, an insecure matinee idol; Brooke Ashton, whose sight is poor; Belinda Blair; and Selsdon Mowbray, a hard-of-hearing character actor with a drinking problem. Poppy Taylor is the stage manager and Tim Allgood her assistant; both also understudy. The dress rehearsal finds the set unfinished and the cast losing lines, cues and props. Fellowes coaxes, shouts and pleads. Under the surface run the company's private troubles, among them Dotty's entanglement with the much younger Garry and Frederick.

- The 1992 comedy features the last performance of Denholm Elliott, part of an ensemble cast that also included Michael Caine and Carol Burnett; Elliott died in October of that same year.
- Bogdanovich originally offered the role played by Carol Burnett to Audrey Hepburn, and Annie Potts was meant to be in the film but was in a car accident and had to be replaced by Marilu Henner.
- Michael Frayn said he suggested the characters of his play be changed to Americans: it would be easier for an American producer to set it up with an American cast, and better if their struggles with British accents and style were part of the action.
- Released by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution on March 20, 1992, the film received mixed reviews from critics and was a box office bomb, grossing $2 million against a $12 million budget.
- Bogdanovich said retrospectively, "I purposely kept a lower profile on this picture because I didn't want people writing about me and my career. I didn't want anything to distract from this movie."
