Biography

Barry Shabaka Henley is an American character actor whose stage work led to a long screen career. Born in New Orleans and raised in San Francisco, he appeared with the San Francisco Mime Troupe before making his television debut in the unsold pilot Clippers. He became a familiar face in Michael Mann's projects, working with the director three times, and played Herbert Muhammad in Ali (2001), a jazz musician in Collateral (2004), a customs officer in The Terminal (2004), and Lieutenant Martin Castillo in Miami Vice (2006). He also appeared in Paterson (2016). On television, he appeared in FlashForward and joined Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Marcus Benson, and co-starred as Uncle Tunde on the CBS sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola from 2019 to 2024. He received an Olivier Award for his theater work.

    At 37, Henley had his first appearance in Clippers, a television pilot that was never sold. The unsold pilot marked his debut at that age.
