Plot summary

Carrie White is a shy, unpopular student at Ewen High School in Maine. In the shower after gym she has her first period and cries for help; the other girls pelt her with tampons and pads, and Chris Hargensen records it on her cell phone and posts it online. Miss Rita Desjardin, who teaches physical education, calms Carrie and sends her home to her mother, Margaret White, who treats a period as sin. Margaret orders her to stop showering with the others; when Carrie objects, Margaret strikes her forehead with a Bible and shuts her in the prayer closet. Carrie learns to control a power that moves objects. Miss Desjardin offers the girls detention or a suspension; Chris refuses and is suspended. Sue Snell, who regrets her part, asks Tommy Ross, her boyfriend, to take Carrie to the prom.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Carrie (2013)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • When MGM announced the remake, Stephen King suggested Lindsay Lohan play Carrie, and original Carrie actress Sissy Spacek said she was flattered they would cast someone who looked like her rather than the character described in the book.
  • To design the glowing energy waves radiating off Carrie during the prom massacre, director Kimberly Peirce and her visual-effects team studied real atomic bomb test footage from the 1950s and 1960s as a reference.
  • Two weeks before release, the studio ran test screenings showing audiences four different alternate endings and asked them to vote on which one they preferred.
  • SPOILERDirector Kimberly Peirce and star Chloe Grace Moretz actually preferred a darker ending, showing Carrie's hand bursting from the grave to grab a pregnant Sue as she gives birth, but the studio overruled them and kept the softer theatrical ending instead.
