Plot summary
Miami-Dade detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs work undercover in South Florida. Their former informant Alonzo Stevens, compromised while working for the FBI, calls them because he believes his wife Leonetta is in danger. FBI agent John Fujima then brings the two into a joint task force targeting a Colombian organization run by José Yero and the kingpin Arcángel de Jesús Montoya. As task force deputies, Crockett and Tubbs pose as smugglers and use their informant Nicholas to arrange an introduction to the cartel. Crockett also becomes involved with Isabella, Montoya's financial adviser and lover, on a speedboat trip to Cuba.

- Filming was hit hard by nature and money problems: seven days of shooting were lost to hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma, and the resulting delays reportedly pushed the true budget over $150 million even though Universal Pictures officially stated it cost $135 million.
- Jamie Foxx, fresh off winning an Oscar for Ray, demanded a raised salary and top billing after signing on, complaining he was being paid less than Colin Farrell; the studio responded by raising Foxx's pay considerably while trimming Farrell's.

After gunshots were fired on the set in the Dominican Republic on October 24, 2005, Jamie Foxx left the country and returned to the United States, forcing the production to scrap its planned Paraguay-set climax and instead shoot a previously discarded, Miami-set ending that director Michael Mann had written earlier.- The drug trafficker Sal Magluta, named by Tubbs in the film's opening scenes as running go-fast boats, is a real Miami cocaine smuggler nicknamed one of the "Cocaine Cowboys," who is actually serving a real-life life sentence for money laundering.
- To push for realism, director Michael Mann took Colin Farrell along on what the actor was told were genuine FBI drug raids, only for it to later come out that the busts had actually been staged for the film.
- Michael Mann deliberately distanced the film from its 1980s TV roots musically, skipping the show's famous theme song and not asking original series composer Jan Hammer to return. Hammer said he was surprised there was no remake of the theme, joking it was "a matter of being too cool for school."
- Filmmaker Harmony Korine named Miami Vice a major influence on his 2012 film Spring Breakers, saying he loved the colors and texture so much that he barely pays attention to the dialogue or plot when he watches it.
